Wanna Look Younger??(of course you do!)

Everyone is a little bit vain, just admit it.....what if I told you that what you are eating could be prematurely aging your skin would that get your interest? What if the foods you eat could actually reverse the aging process would you be willing to make some dietary changes?

The foods we eat show up on our face as wrinkles, puffiness, bags, dark circles and acne among other things.

Our health begins in the gut. So does premature aging. Are you aware that if you heal your gut you can heal your skin? You can!

Here are some of the damaging/aging foods you want to avoid or limit if you are concerned about your skins appearance:

1)Sugar!! This is the number one skin aging culprit in my book. Sugar causes glycation in which the sugar in your blood stream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called "Advanced Glycation End Products" or AGEs(see it tells you in the name what it is going to do to your skin!!!) Gotta love when something is upfront with the damage it will do to you, right?
The more sugar you eat the more AGEs you produce. These AGEs break down collagen in your skin. We want collagen to help keep our skin young and firm. So cut out the sugar and you reduce the AGEs and therefore reduce the collagen destruction, and therefore slow the aging process of your skin! Fantastic, right?!

Signs on your skin that sugar is having a negative impact are things like: lines and wrinkles on the upper forehead, thinning of your skin, a gaunt look to your face, sagging under the eyes, a grey pasty hue to your skin, and widespread acne.

2)Gluten- You had to know that gluten would make this list of things that are bad for your skin, didn't you? Gluten is linked to "leaky gut syndrome" or "intestinal permeability". This means proteins that should not be in your blood stream suddenly are. They cause an alarm reaction in your body and therefore causes widespread inflammation.

How does this show up on your skin? It shows as redness and puffiness, acne on the forehead, cheeks and chin,  and dark patches around the chin area.

3)Dairy- Cows milk is meant for baby cows not humans. For humans, it means adding in an additional 60 hormones per glass!! This totally messes up our natural hormone levels and can cause inflammation, widespread acne, puffy eyelids, dark circles and bags under the eyes.

4)Wine- Oh no!!! Say it ain't so....yep, sorry but too much wine is going to age you. Alcohol dehydrates the skin and is a dangerous skin aging contributor. Wine is basically fermented sugar which causes inflammation in the gut.

Things like fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, a reddish skin tone, enlarged pores and droopy eyelids are all indicators that you are causing premature aging by drinking too much wine! Limit the wine to 1 glass per day.

In as little as 2 weeks time by making changes to your diet you can see an improvement in the quality of your skin. Make permanent changes and soon people will be asking you what "work" you had done and who they should call!!

If you would like more information on the effects of food on your skin you can read
Dr. Nigma Talibs book as well.

Remember, what you eat is either healing you or hurting you.....choose wisely.

Why Should You Care About Vitamin D?

Vitamin D: Part 1
Did you know that more than 50% of the population is deficient in Vitamin D? And, if you are a senior citizen the rate jumps to as high as 95%!!
Even though it is called a "vitamin",  vitamin D is actually a steroid hormone precursor. It is primarily delivered to your body from the sun, not the foods you eat. With the increase in use of sunscreen and less time spent outdoors the amount of people deficient in this important "vitamin" is on the rise.
Very few foods, even those "fortified with vitamin D", have levels high enough to support the bodies requirement. There are some signs you may be deficient, but it is best to have a inexpensive blood test run to find your exact level. I had mine checked and was shocked that I was extremely deficient. It happens to the best of us!!

Signs you could be deficient in Vitamin D include:
1)You feel down. Depression is linked to low vitamin D levels.
2)You are over age 50. As we age our skin does not make as much vitamin D in response to the sun exposure. Your kidneys also are less able to convert the vitamin D to the usable form.
3)You have darker skin. Dark skin acts as a natural sunscreen. African Americans may need up to 10times more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as a pale person.
4)You are overweight or obese. Vitamin D is a fat soluble substance. This means your fat cells will just collect it, it will not be usable by the body. This means you will need a higher intake of vitamin D than a slim person.
5)Your bones ache. Many people will be misdiagnosed with chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia when really they are deficient in Vitamin D.
6)You have gut problems. If you have GI problems like leaky gut, crohn's disease, celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitivity you will not be absorbing fats properly and therefore not absorbing your Vitamin D.

Get your blood work tested. I am happy to order this simple test for you. Just call me at 314-459-0935 or email me at cainchiro@gmail.com

Why Exercise Is Not Enough(I know, I wish it was)

For many years we have been told the key to losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight is to eat less and exercise more. We have all heard that right? And does it work? NO!! So what happens?  People get fed up, and what do they do.....they quit exercising! Instead of looking at their diet and saying maybe something is off with this aspect of my lifestyle. They quit exercising and keep eating the same way they always did. The result is they gain more weight. They become more miserable.

Many of you have heard "Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym" I am sorry but, this is true! What you fuel your body with will determine how much success you have with the time spent exercising.

Big Food Companies want you to believe that living on processed foods is good for you. Yet, our country has an obesity epidemic that only continues to get worse. Lifestyle related diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, elevated cholesterol levels all are on the rise. Obviously, someone is "feeding" us lies.

Where you get your calories from matters. Calories from sugars increase fat storage and make a person hungrier, whereas calories from fat keep a person full longer. Essentially, telling people to run off their extra weight doesn’t do any good if the diet is full of processed foods.(sugars!)

Eating a diet full of nutrient rich foods like healthy fats, lean protein, organically grown vegetables and fruits will fuel your body so that all the effort you put into exercise will be worth something. Avoid packaged foods with chemicals and sugars that harm your body, limit grains and carbohydrates which break down to sugar in your body and work against your weight loss goals.

What you eat is either healing your body or harming your body. Choose wisely.
